Go to Havana

Baseball teams from the Cuban national league are located across Cuba. Perhaps the easiest way to attend a game is to go to Havana. The capital city of Cuba is home to the famous team called Industriales. They usually play at the Estadio Latinoamericano found in the Cerro area. Interestingly President Obama attended a baseball game at this arena during his visit in 2015. This enormous blue stadium stands proudly in the neighbourhood, which is largely residential with a few other attractions as well for tourists closer to the neighbourhood. There is the Castillo De Los Tres Reyes Del Morro, which is a castle and fortress made to fortify Havana Bay. You can also have a look at La Cabana, which is an 18th-century fortress, with a museum that sometimes hold cultural shows. They even have a canon-fire ceremony on certain nights. For baseball lovers of course the stadium alone will be worth it especially on a match day.

Find tickets from sellers

To find a ticket firstly see if your trip matches with the baseball season. In Cuba, the baseball season regularly starts from late November to the close of May. You can then check online to see if the Industriales are having any home games. If games are being played, the next step would be to find a ticket. In Cuba, game fixers are so common and perhaps one of the most reliable means to get a ticket if you can locate one online or while there. So, ask a local who is perhaps interested in the sport. If you're staying with a host family, they will be surely able to help you out. The other way is to go down to the arena and purchase a ticket on game day. A ticket will cost around 5 CUC for admission.

Watch some MLB stars in the making

Once you have purchased a ticket or intend to visit the stadium on the game day make sure to check the papers for the schedules. As cancellation and postponing is quite common there. Once inside the stadium, you can anticipate seeing top-quality athletes, most probably have hopes of one day joining Major League Baseball in the United States. There is a long history of Cuban players making a name for themselves in the US Major League, so you may be able to spot some future stars in the making.

How to get to the stadium

Cerro is one of the main municipalities in Havana and the stadium is just a quick cab ride away, from neighbourhoods such as Vedado and Old Havana. These tend to be the most popular areas where the tourists like to stay. If you are up for some adventure, try navigating through Havana's public transport. The local bus system, known as Havana Metrobus is quite efficient with many buses running every 10 minutes. However, you will have to check to see if there is a direct bust to Cerro, if not, opt for a ride with your companions on a taxi or hop on a shared taxi. These are called maquina, and they operate on certain roads all across Havana. Some things to know when flying to Cuba is that carriers such as interCaribbean Airways have several flights to Cuba and Havana from many cities from the US as well as the Caribbean.
